Platoon Teacher Salaries

During this School Board meeting, held on June 25th, 1951, the salaries of teachers were discussed. We learn that the racialized platoon system not only provided less instruction time for black students, but also impacted the wages of teachers at these schools. Platoon teachers were compensated at 80% of the rate for non-platoon teachers.  Not only was the salary scale for white and black teachers unequal, even though black schools were more crowded, the platoon system further stratified the salary gap between white and black teachers.
