The American Federation of Teachers Speaks Out Against the Platoon System

At the School Board meeting held on October 12th, 1951, the American Federation of Teachers argued for equal pay for platoon teachers.  They stated that the shortened days were beyond their control, and it was not their fault they were dismissed from teaching after four hours.

Dr. Scheps, a member of the Board, admitted that the “real discrimination was to the pupils in the platoon classes,” and stated “platooning was an unhealthy situation."
