On November 26th, 1951, Assistant City Attorney J.S. Derbes responded to the petition against segregation presented by A.P. Tureaud on November 12th.

Mr. Derbes stated that Article XII Section One of the state constitution, last amended in 1944, supported the separation of races in public schools. As such, the Board, which has sworn to uphold the state constitution, would be in violation of its duty if it were to abolish segregation.
